The castle clock had tolled midnightA
With mattock and with spadeB
And silent by the torches' lightA
His corse in earth we laidB
-
The coffin bore his name that thoseC
Of other years might knowD
When earth its secrets should discloseC
Whose bones were laid belowD
-
Peace to the dead no children sungE
Slow pacing up the naveF
No prayers were read no knell was rungE
As deep we dug his graveF
-
We only heard the winter's windG
In many a sullen gustH
As o'er the open grave inclinedG
We murmured Dust to dustH
-
A moonbeam from the arch's heightA
Streamed as we placed the stoneI
The long aisles started into lightA
And all the windows shoneI
-
We thought we saw the banners thenJ
That shook along the wallsK
Whilst the sad shades of mail egrave d menJ
Were gazing on the stallsK
-
'Tis gone again on tombs defacedL
Sits darkness more profoundM
And only by the torch we tracedL
The shadows on the groundM
-
And now the chilling freezing airN
Without blew long and loudO
Upon our knees we breathed one prayerN
Where he slept in his shroudO
-
We laid the broken marble floorP
No name no trace appearsQ
And when we closed the sounding doorP
We thought of him with tearsR
