On Seeing A Bust Of R. B. Sheridan, From A Cast Taken After Death.[209] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCADEFDGG HHIIDD JJBBKKLL K

Alas poor Sheridan when first we metA
'Twas 'mid a smiling circle and thine eyeB
That flashed with eloquent hilarityC
And playful fancy I remember yetA
Freshly as yesterday The gay and fairD
The young and beautiful now in their gravesE
Surrounded us while on the lucid waveF
Of Hampton's waters to the morning airD
The streamer softly played of our light boatG
Which seemed as on a magic sea to floatG
-
I saw thee after in this crowd of lifeH
Conflicting but yet blandly with its strifeH
As the still car of Time rolled on thy cheekI
Wore the same smile yet with a trace more weakI
Lone sorrow came as life declined and careD
And age with slowly furrowing line was thereD
-
I could have spared this fearful sight Most strangeJ
Is the eventful tale of mortal changeJ
Inevitable but death brought so nighB
In form so tangible harrows the eyeB
As all the past floats like a cloud awayK
Alas poor Sheridan I turn and sayK
Not without feelings which such sights impartL
Sad but instructive to the Christian's heartL
-
MayK
