Mortal who armed with holy fortitudeA
The path of good right onward hast pursuedA
May HE to whose eternal throne on highB
The sufferers of the earth with anguish cryB
Be thy protector On that dreary roadC
That leads thee patient to the last abodeC
Of wretchedness in peril and in painD
May HE thy steps direct thy heart sustainD
'Mid scenes where pestilence in darkness fliesE
In caverns where deserted misery liesE
So safe beneath His shadow thou may'st goF
To cheer the dismal wastes of human woeF
O CHARITY our helpless nature's prideG
Thou friend to him who knows no friend besideG
Is there in morning's breath or the sweet galeH
That steals o'er the tired pilgrim of the valeH
Cheering with fragrance fresh his weary frameI
Aught like the incense of thy sacred flameI
Is aught in all the beauties that adornJ
The azure heaven or purple lights of mornJ
Is aught so fair in evening's lingering gleamK
As from thine eye the meek and pensive beamK
That falls like saddest moonlight on the hillL
And distant grove when the wide world is stillL
Thine are the ample views that unconfinedM
Stretch to the utmost walks of human kindM
Thine is the spirit that with widest planN
Brother to brother binds and man to manN
But who for thee O Charity will bearO
Hardship and cope with peril and with careO
Who for thy sake will social sweets foregoF
For scenes of sickness and the sights of woeF
Who for thy sake will seek the prison's gloomP
Where ghastly Guilt implores her lingering doomP
Where Penitence unpitied sits and paleH
That never told to human ears her taleH
Where Agony half famished cries in vainD
Where dark Despondence murmurs o'er her chainD
Where gaunt Disease is wasted to the boneQ
And hollow eyed Despair forgets to groanQ
Approving Mercy marks the vast designR
And proudly cries HOWARD the task be thineR
Already 'mid the darksome vaults profoundS
The inner prison deep beneath the groundS
Consoling hath thy tender look appearedT
In horror's realm the voice of peace is heardU
Be the sad scene disclosed fearless unfoldV
The grating door the inmost cell beholdV
Thought shrinks from the dread sight the paly lampW
Burns faint amid the infectious vapours dampW
Beneath its light full many a livid mienX
And haggard eye ball through the dusk are seenX
In thought I see thee at each hollow soundS
With humid lids oft anxious gaze aroundS
But oh for him who to yon vault confinedM
Has bid a long farewell to human kindM
His wasted form his cold and bloodless cheekY
A tale of sadder sorrow seem to speakY
Of friends perhaps now mingled with the deadZ
Of hope that like a faithless flatterer fledZ
In the utmost hour of need or of a sonA2
Cast to the bleak world's mercy or of oneA2
Whose heart was broken when the stern behestB2
Tore him from pale affection's bleeding breastB2
Despairing from his cold and flinty bedZ
With fearful muttering he has raised his headZ
What pitying spirit what unwonted guestB2
Strays to this last retreat these shades unblestB2
From life and light shut out beneath this cellC2
Long have I bid the cheering sun farewellC2
I heard for ever closed the jealous doorD2
I marked my bed on the forsaken floorD2
I had no hope on earth no human friendB2
Let me unpitied to the dust descendB2
Cold is his frozen heart his eye is rearedB2
To Heaven no more and on his sable beardB2
The tear has ceased to fall Thou canst not bringE2
Back to his mournful heart the morn of springE2
Thou canst not bid the rose of health renewF2
Upon his wasted cheek its crimson hueF2
But at thy look ere yet to hate resignedB2
He murmurs his last curses on mankindB2
At thy kind look one tender thought shall riseE
And his full soul shall thank thee ere he diesE
Oh ye who list to Pleasure's vacant songG2
As in her silken train ye troop alongG2
Who like rank cowards from affliction flyB
Or whilst the precious hours of life pass byB
Lie slumbering in the sun Awake ariseE
To these instructive pictures turn your eyesE
The awful view with other feelings scanN
And learn from HOWARD what man owes to manN
These Virtue are thy triumphs that adornJ
Fitliest our nature and bespeak us bornJ
For loftier action not to gaze and runA2
From clime to clime nor flutter in the sunA2
Dragging a droning flight from flower to flowerH2
Like summer insects in a gaudy hourH2
Nor yet o'er love sick tales with fancy rangeI2
And cry 'Tis pitiful 'tis wondrous strangeI2
But on life's varied views to look aroundB2
And raise expiring sorrow from the groundB2
And he who thus has borne his part assignedB2
In the sad fellowship of human kindB2
Or for a moment soothed the bitter painD
Of a poor brother has not lived in vainD
But 'tis not that Compassion should bestowB2
An unavailing tear on want or woeB2
Lo fairer Order rises from thy planN
Befriending virtue and adorning manN
That Comfort cheers the dark abode of painD
Where wan Disease prayed for relief in vainD
That Mercy soothes the hard behest of lawJ2
That Misery smiles upon her bed of strawJ2
That the dark felon's clan no more combinedB2
Murmur in murderous leagues against mankindB2
That to each cell a mild yet mournful guestB2
Contrition comes and calms the laboring breastB2
Whilst long forgotten tears of virtue flowB2
Thou generous friend of all to thee we oweB2
To thee that Pity sees her views expandB2
To many a cheerless haunt and distant landB2
Whilst warm Philanthropy extends her rayK2
Wide as the world and general as the dayK2
HOWARD I view those deeds and think how vainD
The triumphs of weak man the feeble strainD
That Flattery brings to Conquest's crimson carL2
Amid the bannered host and the proud tents of warD2
From realm to realm the hideous War fiend hiesE
Wide o'er the wasted earth before him fliesE
Affright on pinions fleeter than the windB2
Whilst Death and Desolation fast behindB2
The havoc of his echoing march pursueE
Meantime his steps are bathed in the warm dewE
Of bloodshed and of tears but his dread nameI
Shall perish the loud clarion of his fameI
One day shall cease and wrapt in hideous gloomP
Forgetfulness bestride his shapeless tombP
But bear thou fearless on the God of allM2
To whom the afflicted kneel the friendless callM2
From His high throne of mercy shall approveN2
The holy deeds of Mercy and of LoveO2
For when the vanities of life's brief dayK2
Oblivion's hurrying wing shall sweep awayK2
Each act by Charity and Mercy doneA2
High o'er the wrecks of time shall live aloneQ
Immortal as the heavens and beauteous bloomP
To other worlds and realms beyond the tombP
