WRITTEN DURING SICKNESS AT BATHA
-
When I lie musing on my bed aloneB
And listen to the wintry waterfallC
And many moments that are past and goneD
Moments of sunshine and of joy recallC
-
Though the long night is dark and damp aroundE
And no still star hangs out its friendly flameF
And the winds sweep the sash with sullen soundE
And freezing palsy creeps o'er all my frameF
-
I catch consoling phantasies that springG
From the thick gloom and as the night airs beatH
They touch my heart like wind swift wires that ringG
In mournful modulations strange and sweetH
-
Was it the voice of thee my buried friendI
Was it the whispered vow of faithful loveJ
Do I in Knoyle's green shades thy steps attendI
And hear the high pines murmur thus aboveJ
-
'Twas not thy voice my buried friend Oh noK
'Twas not O Knoyle the murmur of thy treesL
But at the thought I feel my bosom glowK
And woo the dream whose air drawn shadows pleaseL
-
And I can think I see the groves againM
The larches that yon peaceful roof embowerN
The airy down the cattle speckled plainO
And the slant sunshine on the village towerN
-
And I can think I hear its Sabbath chimeP
Come smoothly softened down the woody valeQ
Or mark on yon lone eminence sublimeP
Fast whirling in the wind the white mill's sailQ
-
Phantom that by my bed dost beckoning glideR
Spectre of Death to the damp charnel hieS
Thy dim pale hand thy festering visage hideR
Thou com'st to say I with thy worms shall lieT
-
Thou com'st to say that my once vacant mindU
Amid those scenes shall never more rejoiceV
Nor on the day of rest the hoary hindU
Bend o'er his staff attentive to my voiceV
-
Hast thou not visited that pleasant placeW
Where in this hard world I have happiest beenX
And shall I tremble at thy lifted maceW
That hath pierced all on which life seemed to leanY
-
But Hope might whisper Many a smiling dayZ
And many a cheerful eve may yet be mineA2
Ere age's autumn strew my locks with grayZ
And weary to the dust my steps declineA2
-
I argue not but uncomplaining bowB2
To Heaven's high 'hest secure whate'er my lotC2
Meek spirit of resigned Content that thouB2
Wilt smooth my pillow and forsake me notC2
-
Thou to the turfy hut with pilgrim feetH
Wanderest from halls of loud tumultuous joyD2
Or on the naked down when the winds beatH
Dost sing to the forsaken shepherd boyD2
-
Thou art the sick man's nurse the poor man's friendI
And through each change of life thou hast been mineA2
In every ill thou canst a comfort blendI
And bid the eye though sad in sadness shineA2
-
Thee I have met on Cherwell's willowed sideR
And when our destined road far onward layZ
Thee I have found whatever chance betideR
The kind companion of my devious wayZ
-
With thee unwearied have I loved to roamE2
By the smooth flowing Scheldt or rushing RhineA2
And thou hast gladdened my sequestered homeE2
And hung my peaceful porch with eglantineA2
-
When cares and crosses my tired spirits triedR
When to the dust my father I resignedU
Amidst the quiet shade unseen I sighedR
And blest with thee forgot a world unkindU
-
Ev'n now while toiling through the sleepless nightF2
A tearful look to distant scenes I castG2
And the glad objects that once charmed my sightF2
Remember like soft views of 'faerie' pastG2
-
I see thee come half smiling to my bedH2
With Fortitude more awfully severeN
Whose arm sustaining holds my drooping headH2
Who dries with her dark locks the tender tearN
-
O firmer Spirit on some craggy heightF2
Who when the tempest sails aloft dost standI2
And hear'st the ceaseless billows of the nightF2
Rolling upon the solitary strandI2
-
At this sad hour when no harsh thoughts intrudeJ2
To mar the melancholy mind's reposeK2
When I am left to night and solitudeJ2
And languid life seems verging to its closeL2
-
Oh let me thy pervading influence feelM2
Be every weak and wayward thought repressedN2
And hide thou as with plates of coldest steelM2
The faded aspect and the throbbing breastN2
-
Silent the motley pageant may retreatH
And vain mortality's brief scenes removeO2
Yet let my bosom whilst with life it beatH
Breathe a last prayer for all on earth I loveJ
-
Slow creeping pain weighs down my heavy eyeT
A chiller faintness steals upon my breastN2
'O gentle Muse with some sweet lullaby'D2
Rock me in long forgetfulness to restN2
