At Dover Cliffs, July 20th 1787 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCDEEFGHHGII

On these white cliffs that calm above the floodA
Rear their o'er shadowing heads and at their feetB
Scarce hear the surge that has for ages beatB
Sure many a lonely wanderer has stoodC
And whilst the lifted murmur met his earD
And o'er the distant billows the still EveE
Sail'd slow has thought of all his heart must leaveE
To morrow of the friends he lov'd most dearF
Of social scenes from which he wept to partG
But if like me he knew how fruitless allH
The thoughts that would full fain the past recallH
Soon would he quell the risings of his heartG
And brave the wild winds and unhearing tideI
The World his country and his God his guideI
