Gaily in front of the stockwhipA
The horses come galloping homeB
Leaping and bucking and playingC
With sides all a lather of foamB
But painfully slowly behind themD
With head to the crack of the fallE
And trying so gamely to followF
Comes limping the pearl of them allE
-
He is stumbling and stiff in the shoulderG
And splints from the hoof to the kneeH
But never a horse on the stationI
Has half such a spirit as heH
Give these all the boast of their breedingC
These pets of the paddock and stallE
But ten years ago not their proudestJ
Could live with the pearl of them allE
-
No journey has ever yet beat himK
No day was too heavy or hardL
He was king of the camp and the musterG
And pride of the wings of the yardL
But Time is relentless to followF
The best of us bow to his thrallE
And death with his scythe on his shoulderG
Is dogging the pearl of them allE
-
I watch him go whinnying past meH
And memories come with a whirlM
Of reckless wild rides with a comradeN
And laughing gay rides with a girlM
How she decked him with lilies and love knotsO
And plaited his mane at my sideP
And once in the grief of a partingC
She threw her arms round him and criedP
And I promised I gave her my promiseQ
The night that we parted in tearsR
To keep and be kind to the old horseS
Till Time made a burden of yearsT
And then for his sake and one woman sU
So fetch me my gun from the wallE
I have only this kindness to offerG
As gift to the pearl of them allE
-
Here hold him out there by the yard wingC
And don t let him know by a signV
Turn his head to you ever so littleW
I can t bear his eyes to meet mineV
Then stand still old boy for a momentX
These tears how they blind as they fallE
Now God help my hand to be steadyH
Good bye to the pearl of them allE
