The night is come but not too soonA
And sinking silentlyB
All silently the little moonA
Drops down behind the skyC

There is no light in earth or heavenD
But the cold light of starsE
And the first watch of night is givenD
To the red planet MarsE
-
Is it the tender star of loveF
The star of love and dreamsG
Oh no from that blue tent aboveF
A hero's armour gleamsG
-
And earnest thoughts within me riseH
When I behold afarI
Suspended in the evening skiesH
The shield of that red starI
-
O star of strength I see thee standJ
And smile upon my painK
Thou beckonest with thy mailed handJ
And I am strong againL
-
Within my breast there is no lightM
But the cold light of starsE
I give the first watch of the nightM
To the red planet MarsE
-
The star of the unconquered willN
He rises in my breastO
Serene and resolute and stillN
And calm and self possessedO
-
And thou too whosoe'er thou artP
That readest this brief psalmQ
As one by one thy hopes departP
Be resolute and calmR
-
Oh fear not in a world like thisS
And thou shalt know ere longT
Know how sublime a thing it isU
To suffer and be strongT
