Spring Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDDEE FGFGHHEE IJIJAAEE

From the French of Charles D'Orleans Fifteenth CenturyA
-
Gentle Spring in sunshine cladB
Well dost thou thy power displayC
For Winter maketh the light heart sadB
And thou thou makest the sad heart gayC
He sees thee and calls to his gloomy trainD
The sleet and the snow and the wind and the rainD
And they shrink away and they flee in fearE
When thy merry step draws nearE
-
Winter giveth the fields and the trees so oldF
Their beards of icicles and snowG
And the rain it raineth so fast and coldF
We must cower over the embers lowG
And snugly housed from the wind and weatherH
Mope like birds that are changing featherH
But the storm retires and the sky grows clearE
When thy merry step draws nearE
-
Winter maketh the sun in the gloomy skyI
Wrap him round with a mantle of cloudJ
But Heaven be praised thy step is nighI
Thou tearest away the mournful shroudJ
And the earth looks bright and Winter surlyA
Who has toiled for nought both late and earlyA
Is banished afar by the new born yearE
When thy merry step draws nearE
