Nox Nocti Indicat Scientiam Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD CECE FCGC HIHI GGJG KLKL MNMN OPQR SCSC CTCTWhen I survey the bright | A |
Celestial sphere | B |
So rich with jewels hung that Night | A |
Doth like an Ethiop bride appear | B |
- | |
My soul her wings doth spread | C |
And heavenward flies | D |
Th' Almighty's mysteries to read | C |
In the large volumes of the skies | D |
- | |
For the bright firmament | C |
Shoots forth no flame | E |
So silent but is eloquent | C |
In speaking the Creator's name | E |
- | |
No unregarded star | F |
Contracts its light | C |
Into so small a character | G |
Removed far from our human sight | C |
- | |
But if we steadfast look | H |
We shall discern | I |
In it as in some holy book | H |
How man may heavenly knowledge learn | I |
- | |
It tells the conqueror | G |
That far stretch'd power | G |
Which his proud dangers traffic for | J |
Is but the triumph of an hour | G |
- | |
That from the farthest North | K |
Some nation may | L |
Yet undiscover'd issue forth | K |
And o'er his new got conquest sway | L |
- | |
Some nation yet shut in | M |
With hills of ice | N |
May be let out to scourge his sin | M |
Till they shall equal him in vice | N |
- | |
And then they likewise shall | O |
Their ruin have | P |
For as yourselves your empires fall | Q |
And every kingdom hath a grave | R |
- | |
Thus those celestial fires | S |
Though seeming mute | C |
The fallacy of our desires | S |
And all the pride of life confute | C |
- | |
For they have watch'd since first | C |
The World had birth | T |
And found sin in itself accurst | C |
And nothing permanent on Earth | T |
