When I survey the brightA
Celestial sphereB
So rich with jewels hung that NightA
Doth like an Ethiop bride appearB
-
My soul her wings doth spreadC
And heavenward fliesD
Th' Almighty's mysteries to readC
In the large volumes of the skiesD
-
For the bright firmamentC
Shoots forth no flameE
So silent but is eloquentC
In speaking the Creator's nameE
-
No unregarded starF
Contracts its lightC
Into so small a characterG
Removed far from our human sightC
-
But if we steadfast lookH
We shall discernI
In it as in some holy bookH
How man may heavenly knowledge learnI
-
It tells the conquerorG
That far stretch'd powerG
Which his proud dangers traffic forJ
Is but the triumph of an hourG
-
That from the farthest NorthK
Some nation mayL
Yet undiscover'd issue forthK
And o'er his new got conquest swayL
-
Some nation yet shut inM
With hills of iceN
May be let out to scourge his sinM
Till they shall equal him in viceN
-
And then they likewise shallO
Their ruin haveP
For as yourselves your empires fallQ
And every kingdom hath a graveR
-
Thus those celestial firesS
Though seeming muteC
The fallacy of our desiresS
And all the pride of life confuteC
-
For they have watch'd since firstC
The World had birthT
And found sin in itself accurstC
And nothing permanent on EarthT
