Not to the staring DayA
For all the importunate questionings he pursuesB
In his big violent voiceC
Shall those mild things of bulk and multitudeD
The Trees God's sentinelsE
Over His gift of live life giving airF
Yield of their huge unutterable selvesG
Midsummer manifold each oneH
Voluminous a labyrinth of lifeI
They keep their greenest musings and the dim dreamsJ
That haunt their leafier privaciesK
Dissembled baffling the random gapeseed stillL
With blank full faces or the innocent guileM
Of laughter flickering back from shine to shadeN
And disappearances of homing birdsO
And frolicsome freaksP
Of little boughs that frisk with little boughsQ
-
But at the wordR
Of the ancient sacerdotal NightS
Night of the many secrets whose effectT
Transfiguring hierophantic dreadU
Themselves alone may fully apprehendV
They tremble and are changedW
In each the uncouth individual soulX
Looms forth and gloomsQ
Essential and their bodily presencesQ
Touched with inordinate significanceQ
Wearing the darkness like the liveryY
Of some mysterious and tremendous guildZ
They brood they menace they appalX
Or the anguish of prophecy tears them and they wringA2
Wild hands of warning in the faceQ
Of some inevitable advance of the doomB2
Or each to the other bending beckoning signingA2
As in some monstrous market placeQ
They pass the news these Gossips of the PrimeC2
In that old speech their forefathersQ
Learned on the lawns of Eden ere they heardR
The troubled voice of EveD2
Naming the wondering folk of ParadiseQ
-
Your sense is sealed or you should hear them tellX
The tale of their dim life with allX
Its compost of experience how the SunH
Spreads them their daily feastE2
Sumptuous of light firing them as with wineF2
Of the old Moon's fitful solicitudeD
And those mild messages the StarsQ
Descend in silver silences and dewsQ
Or what the sweet breathing WestG2
Wanton with wading in the swirl of the wheatH2
Said and their leafage laughedI2
And how the wet winged Angel of the RainJ2
Came whispering whispering and the gifts of the YearK2
The sting of the stirring sapL2
Under the wizardry of the young eyed SpringA2
Their summer amplitudes of pompM2
Their rich autumnal melancholy and the shrillX
Embittered housewiferyK2
Of the lean Winter all such thingsQ
And with them all the goodness of the MasterK2
Whose right hand blesses with increase and lifeI
Whose left hand honours with decay and deathN2
-
Thus under the constraint of NightS
These gross and simple creaturesQ
Each in his scores of rings which rings are yearsQ
A servant of the WillX
And God the Craftsman as He walksQ
The floor of His workshop hearkens full of cheerK2
In thus accomplishingA2
The aims of His miraculous artistryK2
