I. M. R. T. Hamilton Bruce (1846-1899) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCEFGHGIBIB

Out of the night that covers meA
Black as the Pit from pole to poleB
I thank whatever gods may beA
For my unconquerable soulB
In the fell clutch of circumstanceC
I have not winced nor cried aloudD
Under the bludgeonings of chanceC
My head is bloody but unbowedE
Beyond this place of wrath and tearsF
Looms but the Horror of the shadeG
And yet the menace of the yearsH
Finds and shall find me unafraidG
It matters not how strait the gateI
How charged with punishments the scrollB
I am the master of my fateI
I am the captain of my soulB
