How quick the change from joy to woeB
How chequered is our lot belowB
Seldom we view the prospect fairC
Dark clouds of sorrow pain and careC
Some pleasing intervals betweenD
Scowl over more than half the sceneD
Last week with Delia gentle maidE
Far hence in happier fields I strayedE
While on her dear enchanting tongueF
Soft sounds of grateful welcome hungF
For absence had withheld it longG
'Welcome my long lost love she saidH
E'er since our adverse fates decreedI
That we must part and I must mournJ
Till once more blessed by thy returnK
Love on whose influence I reliedL
For all the transports I enjoyedM
Has played the cruel tyrant's partN
And turned tormentor to my heartN
But let me hold thee to my breastO
Dear partner of my joy and restO
And not a pain and not a fearP
Or anxious doubt shall enter there '-
Happy thought I the favoured youthQ
Blessed with such undissembled truthQ
Five suns successive rose and setR
And saw no monarch in his stateS
Wrapped in the blaze of majestyT
So free from every care as IU
Next day the scene was overcastV
Such day till then I never passedV
For on that day relentless fateS
Delia and I must separateS
Yet ere we looked our last farewellW
From her dear lips this comfort fellW
'Fear not that time where'er we roveX
Or absence shall abate my love '-
And can I doubt my charming maidE
As unsincere what you have saidH
Banished from thee to what I hateS
Dull neighbours and insipid chatY
No joy to cheer me none in viewZ
But the dear hope of meeting youZ
And that through passion's optic seenD
With ages interposed betweenD
Blessed with the kind support you giveA2
'Tis by your promised truth I liveB2
How deep my woes how fierce my flameC2
You best may tell who feel the sameC2
