Spoken At The Westminster Election Next After His DeceaseA
-
-
Our good old friend is gone gone to his restB
Whose social converse was itself a feastC
O ye of riper years who recollectD
How once ye loved and eyed him with respectD
Both in the firmness of his better dayE
While yet he ruled you with a father's swayE
And when impair'd by time and glad to restB
Yet still with looks in mild complacence drestB
He took his annual seat and mingled hereF
His sprightly vein with yours now drop a tearG
In morals blameless as in manners meekH
He knew no wish that he might blush to speakH
But happy in whatever state belowI
And richer than the rich in being soI
Obtain'd the hearts of all and such a meedB
At length from one as made him rich indeedB
Hence then ye titles hence not wanted hereF
Go garnish merit in a higher sphereJ
The brows of those whose more exalted lotB
He could congratulate but envied notB
Light lie the turf good senior on thy breastB
And tranquil as thy mind was be thy restB
Though living thou hadst more desert than fameK
And not a stone now chronicles thy nameK
