Vanity Of The World Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGHG IJII KLEL IIII

God gives his mercies to be spentA
Your hoard will do your soul no goodB
Gold is a blessing only lentA
Repaid by giving others foodC
-
The world's esteem is but a bribeD
To buy their peace you sell your ownE
The slave of a vainglorious tribeD
Who hate you while they make you knownE
-
The joy that vain amusements giveF
Oh sad conclusion that it bringsG
The honey of a crowded hiveH
Defended by a thousand stingsG
-
'Tis thus the world rewards the foolsI
That live upon her treacherous smilesJ
She leads them blindfold by her rulesI
And ruins all whom she beguilesI
-
God knows the thousands who go downK
From pleasure into endless woeL
And with a long despairing groanE
Blaspheme the Maker as they goL
-
Oh fearful thought be timely wiseI
Delight but in a Saviour's charmsI
And God shall take you to the skiesI
Embraced in everlasting armsI
