To The Reverend Mr. Newton. An Invitation Into The Country. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFG HIJK LMLM NONP

The swallows in their torpid stateA
Compose their useless wingB
And bees in hives as idly waitA
The call of early SpringB
-
-
The keenest frost that binds the streamC
The wildest wind that blowsD
Are neither felt nor fear'd by themE
Secure of their reposeD
-
-
But man all feeling and awakeF
The gloomy scene surveysG
With present ills his heart must acheF
And pant for brighter daysG
-
-
Old Winter halting o'er the meadH
Bids me and Mary mournI
But lovely Spring peeps o'er his headJ
And whispers your returnK
-
-
Then April with her sister MayL
Shall chase him from the bowersM
And weave fresh garlands every dayL
To crown the smiling hoursM
-
-
And if a tear that speaks regretN
Of happier times appearO
A glimpse of joy that we have metN
Shall shine and dry the tearP
