To The Rev. William Cawthorne Unwin Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFG HIHIJJ AKALMM NONOBB

Unwin I should but ill repayA
The kindness of a friendB
Whose worth deserves as warm a layA
As ever friendship pennedB
Thy name omitted in a pageC
That would reclaim a vicious ageC
-
An union formed as mine with theeD
Not rashly or in sportE
May be as fervent in degreeD
And faithful in its sortE
And may as rich in comfort proveF
As that of true fraternal loveG
-
The bud inserted in the rindH
The bud of peach or roseI
Adorns though differing in its kindH
The stock whereon it growsI
With flower as sweet or full as fairJ
As if produced by nature thereJ
-
Not rich I render what I mayA
I seize thy name in hasteK
And place it in this first essayA
Lest this should prove the lastL
'Tis where it should be in a planM
That holds in view the good of manM
-
The poet's lyre to fix his fameN
Should be the poet's heartO
Affection lights a brighter flameN
Than ever blazed by artO
No muses on these lines attendB
I sink the poet in the friendB
