To The Immortal Memory Of The Halibut, On Which I Dined This Day, Monday, April 26, 1784. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST UVWXYZA2

Where hast thou floated in what seas pursuedA
Thy pastime when wast thou an egg new spawn'dB
Lost in the immensity of ocean's wasteC
Roar as they might the overbearing windsD
That rock'd the deep thy cradle thou wast safeE
And in thy minikin and embryo stateF
Attach'd to the firm leaf of some salt weedG
Didst outlive tempests such as wrung and rack'dH
The joints of many a stout and gallant barkI
And whelm'd them in the unexplored abyssJ
Indebted to no magnet and no chartK
Nor under guidance of the polar fireL
Thou wast a voyager on many coastsM
Grazing at large in meadows submarineN
Where flat Batavia just emerging peepsO
Above the brine where Caledonia's rocksP
Beat back the surge and where Hibernia shootsQ
Her wondrous causeway far into the mainR
Wherever thou hast fed thou little thought'stS
And I not more that I should feed on theeT
Peace therefore and good health and much good fishU
To him who sent thee and success as oftV
As it descends into the billowy gulfW
To the same drag that caught thee Fare thee wellX
Thy lot thy brethren of the slimy finY
Would envy could they know that thou wast doom'dZ
To feed a bard and to be praised in verseA2
