To Sir Joshua Reynolds Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIJKK LMNOPPQQNORRSTFFUUVV WW

Dear President whose art sublimeA
Gives perpetuity to timeA
And bids transactions of a dayB
That fleeting hours would waft awayB
To dark futurity surviveC
And in unfading beauty liveC
You cannot with a grace declineD
A special mandate of the NineD
Yourself whatever task you chooseE
So much indebted to the MuseE
Thus say the sisterhood We comeF
Fix well your pallet on your thumbF
Prepare the pencil and the tintsG
We come to furnish you with hintsG
French disappointment British gloryH
Must be the subject of the storyH
First strike a curve a graceful bowI
Then slope it to a point belowJ
Your outline easy airy lightK
Filled up becomes a paper kiteK
Let independence sanguine horridL
Blaze like a meteor in the foreheadM
Beneath but lay aside your gracesN
Draw six and twenty rueful facesO
Each with a staring steadfast eyeP
Fixed on his great and good allyP
France flies the kite 'tis on the wingQ
Britannia's lightning cuts the stringQ
The wind that raised it ere it ceasesN
Just rends it into thirteen piecesO
Takes charge of every fluttering sheetR
And lays them all at George's feetR
Iberia trembling from afarS
Renounces the confederate warT
Her efforts and her arts o'ercomeF
France calls her shattered navies homeF
Repenting Holland learns to mournU
The sacred treaties she has tornU
Astonishment and awe profoundV
Are stamped upon the nations roundV
Without one friend above all foesW
Britannia gives the world reposeW
