Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDDDEEFFDDGGHHDD IIJJKK DDLMDDDDDDA noble theme demands a noble verse | A |
In such I thank you for your fine oysters | B |
The barrel was magnificently large | C |
But being sent to Olney at free charge | C |
Was not inserted in the driver's list | D |
And therefore overlook'd forgot or miss'd | D |
For when the messenger whom we despatch'd | D |
Inquir'd for oysters Hob his noddle scratch'd | D |
Denying that his wagon or his wain | E |
Did any such commodity contain | E |
In consequence of which your welcome boon | F |
Did not arrive till yesterday at noon | F |
In consequence of which some chanc'd to die | D |
And some though very sweet were very dry | D |
Now Madam says and what she says must still | G |
Deserve attention say she what she will | G |
That what we call the diligence be case | H |
It goes to London with a swifter pace | H |
Would better suit the carriage of your gift | D |
Returning downward with a pace as swift | D |
And therefore recommends it with this aim | I |
To save at least three days the price the same | I |
For though it will not carry or convey | J |
For less than twelve pence send whate'er you may | J |
For oyster bred upon the salt sea shore | K |
Pack'd in a barrel they will charge no more | K |
- | |
News have I none that I can deign to write | D |
Save that it rain'd prodigiously last night | D |
And that ourselves were at the seventh hour | L |
Caught in the first beginning of the show'r | M |
But walking running and with much ado | D |
Go home just time enough to be wet through | D |
Yet both are well and wond'rous to be told | D |
Soused as we were we yet have caught no cold | D |
And wishing just the same good hap to you | D |
We say good Madam and good Sir adieu | D |
