The twentieth year is well nigh pastA
Since first our sky was overcastA
Ah would that this might be the lastA
My MaryB
-
Thy spirits have a fainter flowC
I see thee daily weaker growC
'Twas my distress that brought thee lowC
My MaryB
-
Thy needles once a shining storeD
For my sake restless heretoforeD
Now rust disused and shine no moreD
My MaryB
-
For though thou gladly wouldst fulfilC
The same kind office for me stillC
Thy sight now seconds not thy willC
My MaryB
-
But well thou playedst the housewife's partE
And all thy threads with magic artE
Have wound themselves about this heartE
My MaryB
-
Thy indistinct expressions seemF
Like language uttered in a dreamF
Yet me they charm whate'er the themeF
My MaryB
-
Thy silver locks once auburn brightG
Are still more lovely in my sightG
Than golden beams of orient lightG
My MaryB
-
For could I view nor them nor theeB
What sight worth seeing could I seeB
The sun would rise in vain for meB
My MaryB
-
Partakers of thy sad declineH
Thy hands their little force resignH
Yet gently pressed press gently mineH
My MaryB
-
Such feebleness of limbs thou prov'stG
That now at every step thou mov'stG
Upheld by two yet still thou lov'stG
My MaryB
-
And still to love though pressed with illC
In wintry age to feel no chillC
With me is to be lovely stillC
My MaryB
-
But ah by constant heed I knowC
How oft the sadness that I showC
Transforms thy smiles to looks of woeC
My MaryB
-
And should my future lot be castG
With much resemblance of the pastG
Thy worn out heart will break at lastG
My MaryB
