The Swallow Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF DGDG HIHI JBJB

I am fond of the swallow I learn from her flightA
Had I skill to improve it a lesson of loveB
How seldom on earth do we see her alightA
She dwells in the skies she is ever aboveB
-
It is on the wing that she takes her reposeC
Suspended and poised in the regions of airD
'Tis not in our fields that her sustenance growsC
It is winged like herself 'tis ethereal fareD
-
She comes in the spring all the summer she staysE
And dreading the cold still follows the sunF
So true to our love we should covet his raysE
And the place where he shines not immediately shunF
-
Our light should be love and our nourishment prayerD
It is dangerous food that we find upon earthG
The fruit of this world is beset with a snareD
In itself it is hurtful as vile in its birthG
-
'Tis rarely if ever she settles belowH
And only when building a nest for her youngI
Were it not for her brood she would never bestowH
A thought upon anything filthy as dungI
-
Let us leave it ourselves 'tis a mortal abodeJ
To bask every moment in infinite loveB
Let us fly the dark winter and follow the roadJ
That leads to the dayspring appearing aboveB
