The Shrubbery. Written In A Time Of Affliction Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI AJAJ AKAL

Oh happy shades to me unblestA
Friendly to peace but not to meB
How ill the scene that offers restA
And heart that cannot rest agreeB
-
-
This glassy stream that spreading pineC
Those alders quivering to the breezeD
Might soothe a soul less hurt than mineC
And please if any thing could pleaseD
-
-
But fix'd unalterable CareE
Foregoes not what she feels withinF
Shows the same sadness everywhereE
And slights the season and the sceneG
-
-
For all that pleased in wood or lawnH
While Peace possess'd these silent bowersI
Her animating smile withdrawnH
Has lost its beauties and its powersI
-
-
The saint or moralist should treadA
This moss grown alley musing slowJ
They seek like me the secret shadeA
But not like me to nourish woeJ
-
-
Me fruitful scenes and prospects wasteA
Alike admonish not to roamK
These tell me of enjoyments pastA
And those of sorrows yet to comeL
