The New Convert Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJKJ

The new born child of gospel graceA
Like some fair tree when summer's nighB
Beneath Emmanuel's shining faceA
Lifts up his blooming branch on highB
-
No fears he feels he sees no foesC
No conflict yet his faith employsD
Nor has he learnt to whom he owesC
The strength and peace his soul enjoysD
-
But sin soon darts its cruel stingE
And comforts sinking day by dayF
What seem'd his own a self fed springE
Proves but a brook that glides awayF
-
When Gideon arm'd his numerous hostG
The Lord soon made his numbers lessH
And said Lest Israel vainly boastG
My arm procured me this successH
-
Thus will He bring our spirits downI
And draw our ebbing comforts lowJ
That saved by grace but not our ownK
We may not claim the praise we oweJ
