Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJKJThe new born child of gospel grace | A |
Like some fair tree when summer's nigh | B |
Beneath Emmanuel's shining face | A |
Lifts up his blooming branch on high | B |
- | |
No fears he feels he sees no foes | C |
No conflict yet his faith employs | D |
Nor has he learnt to whom he owes | C |
The strength and peace his soul enjoys | D |
- | |
But sin soon darts its cruel sting | E |
And comforts sinking day by day | F |
What seem'd his own a self fed spring | E |
Proves but a brook that glides away | F |
- | |
When Gideon arm'd his numerous host | G |
The Lord soon made his numbers less | H |
And said Lest Israel vainly boast | G |
My arm procured me this success | H |
- | |
Thus will He bring our spirits down | I |
And draw our ebbing comforts low | J |
That saved by grace but not our own | K |
We may not claim the praise we owe | J |
