The nymph must lose her female friendA
If more admired than sheB
But where will fierce contention endA
If flowers can disagreeB
-
Within the garden's peaceful sceneC
Appeared two lovely foesD
Aspiring to the rank of queenC
The Lily and the RoseD
-
The Rose soon reddened into rageE
And swelling with disdainF
Appealed to many a poet's pageE
To prove her right to reignF
-
The Lily's height bespoke commandG
A fair imperial flowerH
She seemed designed for Flora's handG
The sceptre of her powerH
-
This civil bickering and debateI
The goddess chanced to hearJ
And flew to save ere yet too lateI
The pride of the parterreJ
-
Yours is she said the nobler hueK
And yours the statelier mienC
And till a third surpasses youK
Let each be deemed a queenC
-
Thus soothed and reconciled each seeksL
The fairest British fairJ
The seat of empire is her cheeksL
They reign united thereJ
