The Judgement Of The Poets Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIK LMNM OPOQ RSRS TUVU WQW

Two nymphs both nearly of an ageA
Of numerous charms possessedB
A warm dispute once chanced to wageA
Whose temper was the bestB
-
The worth of each had been completeC
Had both alike been mildD
But one although her smile was sweetC
Frowned oftener than she smiledD
-
And in her humour when she frownedE
Would raise her voice and roarF
And shake with fury to the groundE
The garland that she woreF
-
The other was of gentler castG
From all such frenzy clearH
Her frowns were seldom known to lastG
And never proved severeH
-
To poets of renown in songI
The nymphs referred the causeJ
Who strange to tell all judged it wrongI
And gave misplaced applauseK
-
They gentle called and kind and softL
The flippant and the scoldM
And though she changed her mood so oftN
That failing left untoldM
-
No judges sure were e'er so madO
Or so resolved to errP
In short the charms her sister hadO
They lavished all on herQ
-
Then thus the God whom fondly theyR
Their great Inspirer callS
Was heard one genial summer's dayR
To reprimand them allS
-
'Since thus ye have combined ' he saidT
'My favourite nymph to slightU
Adorning May that peevish maidV
With June's undoubted rightU
-
'The minx shall for your folly's sakeW
Still prove herself a shrewQ
Shall make your scribbling fingers acheW
And pinch your noses blue '-
