Long plunged in sorrow I resignA
My soul to that dear hand of thineA
Without reserve or fearB
That hand shall wipe my streaming eyesC
Or into smiles of glad surpriseC
Transform the falling tearD
-
My sole possession is thy loveE
In earth beneath or heaven aboveE
I have no other storeF
And though with fervent suit I prayG
And importune thee night and dayG
I ask thee nothing moreF
-
My rapid hours pursue the courseH
Prescribed them by love's sweetest forceH
And I thy sovereign willI
Without a wish to escape my doomJ
Though still a sufferer from the wombJ
And doomed to suffer stillI
-
By thy command where'er I strayG
Sorrow attends me all my wayG
A never failing friendK
And if my sufferings may augmentL
Thy praise behold me well contentL
Let sorrow still attendK
-
It cost me no regret that sheM
Who followed Christ should follow meM
And though where'er she goesN
Thorns spring spontaneous at her feetO
I love her and extract a sweetO
From all my bitter woesN
-
Adieu ye vain delights of earthP
Insipid sports and childish mirthP
I taste no sweets in youQ
Unknown delights are in the crossR
All joy beside to me is drossR
And Jesus thought so tooQ
-
The cross Oh ravishment and blissS
How grateful e'en its anguish isT
Its bitterness how sweetO
There every sense and all the mindU
In all her faculties refinedU
Tastes happiness completeO
-
Souls once enabled to disdainV
Base sublunary joys maintainV
Their dignity secureW
The fever of desire is passedX
And love has all its genuine tasteY
Is delicate and pureW
-
Self love no grace in sorrow seesZ
Consults her own peculiar easeZ
'Tis all the bliss she knowsN
But nobler aims true Love employA2
In self denial is her joyA2
In suffering her reposeN
-
Sorrow and love go side by sideB2
Nor height nor depth can e'er divideB2
Their heaven appointed bandsC2
Those dear associates still are oneD2
Nor till the race of life is runD2
Disjoin their wedded handsC2
-
Jesus avenger of our fallE2
Thou faithful lover above allE2
The cross has ever borneF2
Oh tell me life is in thy voiceG2
How much afflictions were thy choiceG2
And sloth and ease thy scornF2
-
Thy choice and mine shall be the sameH2
Inspirer of that holy flameH2
Which must for ever blazeI2
To take the cross and follow theeM
Where love and duty lead shall beM
My portion and my praiseI2
