The Glowworm Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HIHJ FKFK LMLM ANON

Beneath the hedge or near the streamA
A worm is known to strayB
That shows by night a lucid beamA
Which disappears by dayB
-
Disputes have been and still prevailC
From whence his rays proceedD
Some give that honour to his tailC
And others to his headE
-
But this is sure the hand of mightF
That kindles up the skiesG
Gives him a modicum of lightF
Proportion'd to his sizeG
-
Perhaps indulgent Nature meantH
By such a lamp bestow'dI
To bid the traveller as he wentH
Be careful where he trodJ
-
Nor crush a worm whose useful lightF
Might serve however smallK
To show a stumbling stone by nightF
And save him from a fallK
-
Whate'er she meant this truth divineL
Is legible and plainM
'Tis power Almighty bids him shineL
Nor bids him shine in vainM
-
Ye proud and wealthy let this themeA
Teach humbler thoughts to youN
Since such a reptile has its gemO
And boasts its splendour tooN
