The Flatting Mill. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBC DEDE FGFH IJIJ KEKE LMLM

An IllustrationA
-
-
When a bar of pure silver or ingot of goldB
Is sent to be flatted or wrought into lengthC
It is pass'd between cylinders often and roll'dB
In an engine of utmost mechanical strengthC
-
-
Thus tortured and squeezed at last it appearsD
Like a loose heap of ribbon a glittering showE
Like music it tinkles and rings in your earsD
And warm'd by the pressure is all in a glowE
-
-
This process achieved it is doom'd to sustainF
The thump after thump of a gold beater's malletG
And at last is of service in sickness or painF
To cover a pill for a delicate palateH
-
-
Alas for the poet who dares undertakeI
To urge reformation of national illJ
His head and his heart are both likely to acheI
With the double employment of mallet and millJ
-
-
If he wish to instruct he must learn to delightK
Smooth ductile and even his fancy must flowE
Must tinkle and glitter like gold to the sightK
And catch in its progress a sensible glowE
-
-
After all he must beat it as thin and as fineL
As the leaf that enfolds what an invalid swallowsM
For truth is unwelcome however divineL
And unless you adorn it a nausea followsM
