The Faithful Bird. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCB DDEFFE GGHIIH JJKLLK MMNOON PPQRRQ

The greenhouse is my summer seatA
My shrubs displaced from that retreatA
Enjoy'd the open airB
Two goldfinches whose sprightly songC
Had been their mutual solace longC
Lived happy prisoners thereB
-
-
They sang as blithe as finches singD
That flutter loose on golden wingD
And frolic where they listE
Strangers to liberty 'tis trueF
But that delight they never knewF
And therefore never miss'dE
-
-
But nature works in every breastG
With force not easily suppress'dG
And Dick felt some desiresH
That after many an effort vainI
Instructed him at length to gainI
A pass between his wiresH
-
-
The open windows seem'd to inviteJ
The freeman to a farewell flightJ
But Tom was still confinedK
And Dick although his way was clearL
Was much too generous and sincereL
To leave his friend behindK
-
-
So settling on his cage by playM
And chirp and kiss he seem'd to sayM
You must not live aloneN
Nor would he quit that chosen standO
Till I with slow and cautious handO
Return'd him to his ownN
-
-
O ye who never taste the joysP
Of Friendship satisfied with noiseP
Fandango ball and routQ
Blush when I tell you how a birdR
A prison with a friend preferr'dR
To liberty withoutQ
