The Doves Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFG HIHJ KLKL MIMI NONO OOOO PQPR OOOO

Reasoning at every step he treadsA
Man yet mistakes his wayB
While meaner things whom instinct leadsC
Are rarely known to strayB
-
One silent eve I wandered lateD
And heard the voice of loveE
The turtle thus addressed her mateD
And soothed the listening doveE
-
Our mutual bond of faith and truthF
No time shall disengageG
Those blessings of our early youthF
Shall cheer our latest ageG
-
While innocence without disguiseH
And constancy sincereI
Shall fill the circles of those eyesH
And mine can read them thereJ
-
Those ills that wait on all belowK
Shall ne'er be felt by meL
Or gently felt or only soK
As being shared with theeL
-
When lightnings flash among the treesM
Or kites are hovering nearI
I fear lest thee alone they seizeM
And know no other fearI
-
'Tis then I feel myself a wifeN
And press thy wedded sideO
Resolved a union formed for lifeN
Death never shall divideO
-
But oh if fickle and unchasteO
Forgive a transient thoughtO
Thou couldst become unkind at lastO
And scorn thy present lotO
-
No need of lightnings from on highP
Or kites with cruel beakQ
Denied the endearments of thine eyeP
This widowed heart would breakR
-
Thus sang the sweet sequestered birdO
Soft as the passing windO
And I recorded what I heardO
A lesson for mankindO
