The noon was shady and soft airsA
Swept Ouse s silent tideB
When scaped from literary caresA
I wander d on his sideB
My spaniel prettiest of his raceC
And high in pedigreeD
Two nymphs adorn d with every graceC
That spaniel found for meD
Now wanton d lost in flags and reedsE
Now starting into sightF
Pursued the swallow o er the meadsE
With scarce a slower flightF
It was the time when Ouse display dD
His lilies newly blownG
Their beauties I intent survey dD
And one I wish d my ownG
With cane extended far I soughtH
To steer it close to landI
But still the prize though nearly caughtJ
Escaped my eager handI
Beau mark d my unsuccessful painsK
With fix d considerate faceC
And puzzling set his puppy brainsK
To comprehend the caseC
But with a cherup clear and strongL
Dispersing all his dreamM
I thence withdrew and follow d longL
The windings of the streamM
My ramble ended I return dD
Beau trotting far beforeN
The floating wreath again discern dD
And plunging left the shoreN
I saw him with that lily cropp dD
Impatient swim to meetO
My quick approach and soon he dropp dD
The treasure at my feetO
Charm d with the sight the world I criedB
Shall hear of this thy deedP
My dog shall mortify the prideB
Of man s superior breedP
But chief myself I will enjoinQ
Awake at duty s callR
To show a love as prompt as thineS
To Him who gives me allR
