Strada's Nightingale Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FEGH IJIJ

The shepherd touch'd his reed sweet PhilomelA
Essay'd and oft essay'd to catch the strainB
And treasuring as on her ear they fellA
The numbers echo d note for note againC
-
The peevish youth who ne'er had foundbeforeD
A rival of his skill indignant heardE
And soon for various was his tuneful storeD
In loftier tones defied the simple birdE
-
She dared the task and rising as he roseF
With all the force that passion gives inspiredE
Return d the sounds awhile but in the closeG
Exhausted fell and at his feet expiredH
-
Thus strength not skill prevail'd O fatal strifeI
By thee poor songstress playfully begunJ
And O sad victory which cost thy lifeI
And he may wish that he had never wonJ
