See where the Thames the purest streamA
That wavers to the noon day beamA
Divides the vale belowB
While like a vein of liquid oreC
His waves enrich the happy shoreC
Still shining as they flowB
-
Nor yet my Delia to the mainD
Runs the sweet tide without a stainD
Unsullied as it seemsE
Thy nymphs of many a sable floodF
Deform with streaks of oozy mudF
The bosom of the ThamesG
-
Some idle rivulets that feedH
And suckle every noisome weedH
A sandy bottom boastI
For ever bright for ever clearJ
Tho trifling shallow rills appearJ
In their own channel lostK
-
Thus fares it with the human soulL
Where copious floods of passion rollL
By genuine love suppliedM
Fair in itself the current showsN
But ah a thousand anxious woesN
Pollute the noble tideM
-
These are emotions known to fewO
For where at most a vapoury dewO
Surrounds the tranquil heartP
Then as the triflers never proveQ
The glad excess of real loveR
They never prove the smartP
-
O then my life at last relentS
Though cruel the reproach I sentS
My sorrow was unfeignedS
Your passion had I loved you notS
You might have scorned renounced forgotS
And I had ne'er complainedS
-
While you indulge a groundless fearJ
The imaginary woes you bearT
Are real woes to meU
But thou art kind and good thou artS
Nor wilt by wronging thine own heartS
Unjustly punish meU
-
How blessed the youth whom fate ordainsN
A kind relief from all his painsN
In some admired fairT
Whose tenderest wishes find expressedS
Their own resemblance in her breastS
Exactly copied thereT
-
What good soe'er the gods dispenseN
The enjoyment of its influenceN
Still on her love dependsN
Her love the shield that guards his heartS
Or wards the blow or blunts the dartS
That peevish fortune sendsN
-
Thus Delia while thy love enduresN
The flame my happy breast securesN
From fortune's fickle powerV
Change as she list she may increaseN
But not abate my happinessN
Confirmed by thee beforeC
-
Thus while I share her smiles with theeU
Welcome my love shall ever beU
The favours she bestowsN
Yet not on those I found my blissN
But in the noble ecstasiesN
The faithful bosom knowsN
-
And when she prunes her wings for flightS
And flutters nimbly from my sightS
Contented I resignW
Whate'er she gave thy love aloneX
I can securely call my ownX
Happy while that is mineW
