Report Of An Adjudged Case Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGHG IJIJ AKAK ALAL MNON PQRQBetween Nose and Eyes a strange contest arose | A |
The spectacles set them unhappily wrong | B |
The point in dispute was as all the world knows | A |
To which the said spectacles ought to belong | B |
- | |
So the Tongue was the Lawyer and argued the cause | C |
With a great deal of skill and a wig full of learning | D |
While chief baron Ear sat to balance the laws | E |
So famed for his talent in nicely discerning | D |
- | |
In behalf of the Nose it will quickly appear | F |
And your lordship he said will undoubtedly find | G |
That the Nose has had spectacles always in wear | H |
Which amounts to possession time out of mind | G |
- | |
Then holding the spectacles up to the court | I |
Your lordship observes they are made with a straddle | J |
As wide as the ridge of the Nose is in short | I |
Designed to sit close to it just like a saddle | J |
- | |
Again would your lordship a moment suppose | A |
'Tis a case that has happened and may be again | K |
That the visage or countenance had not a Nose | A |
Pray who would or who could wear spectacles then | K |
- | |
On the whole it appears and my argument shows | A |
With a reasoning the court will never condemn | L |
That the spectacles plainly were made for the Nose | A |
And the Nose was as plainly intended for them | L |
- | |
Then shifting his side as a lawyer knows how | M |
He pleaded again in behalf of the Eyes | N |
But what were his arguments few people know | O |
For the court did not think they were equally wise | N |
- | |
So his lordship decreed with a grave solemn tone | P |
Decisive and clear without on if or but | Q |
That whenever the Nose put his spectacles on | R |
By daylight or candlelight Eyes should be shut | Q |
