Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFGHI

A Spartan 'scaping from the fightA
His mother met him in his flightA
Upheld a falchion to his breastB
And thus the fugitive address'dB
'Thou canst but live to blot with shameC
Indelible thy mother's nameC
While every breath that thou shalt drawD
Offends against thy country's lawD
But if thou perish by this handE
Myself indeed throughout the landE
To my dishonor shall be knownF
The mother still of such a sonG
But Sparta will be safe and freeH
And that shall serve to comfort me 'I
