Oh that those lips had language Life has pass'dA
With me but roughly since I heard thee lastA
Those lips are thine thy own sweet smiles I seeB
The same that oft in childhood solaced meB
Voice only fails else how distinct they sayC
Grieve not my child chase all thy fears awayC
The meek intelligence of those dear eyesD
Blest be the art that can immortalizeD
The art that baffles time's tyrannic claimE
To quench it here shines on me still the sameE
-
Faithful remembrancer of one so dearF
Oh welcome guest though unexpected hereG
Who bidd'st me honour with an artless songH
Affectionate a mother lost so longH
I will obey not willingly aloneI
But gladly as the precept were her ownI
And while that face renews my filial griefJ
Fancy shall weave a charm for my reliefJ
Shall steep me in Elysian reverieB
A momentary dream that thou art sheB
-
My mother when I learn'd that thou wast deadK
Say wast thou conscious of the tears I shedK
Hover'd thy spirit o'er thy sorrowing sonL
Wretch even then life's journey just begunL
Perhaps thou gav'st me though unseen a kissM
Perhaps a tear if souls can weep in blissM
Ah that maternal smile it answers YesN
I heard the bell toll'd on thy burial dayC
I saw the hearse that bore thee slow awayC
And turning from my nurs'ry window drewO
A long long sigh and wept a last adieuO
But was it such It was Where thou art goneP
Adieus and farewells are a sound unknownI
May I but meet thee on that peaceful shoreQ
The parting sound shall pass my lips no moreQ
Thy maidens griev'd themselves at my concernR
Oft gave me promise of a quick returnR
What ardently I wish'd I long believ'dS
And disappointed still was still deceiv'dS
By disappointment every day beguil'dT
Dupe of to morrow even from a childT
Thus many a sad to morrow came and wentU
Till all my stock of infant sorrow spentU
I learn'd at last submission to my lotV
But though I less deplor'd thee ne'er forgotV
-
Where once we dwelt our name is heard no moreQ
Children not thine have trod my nurs'ry floorQ
And where the gard'ner Robin day by dayC
Drew me to school along the public wayC
Delighted with my bauble coach and wraptC
In scarlet mantle warm and velvet captC
'Tis now become a history little knownI
That once we call'd the past'ral house our ownI
Short liv'd possession but the record fairW
That mem'ry keeps of all thy kindness thereW
Still outlives many a storm that has effac'dC
A thousand other themes less deeply trac'dC
Thy nightly visits to my chamber madeC
That thou might'st know me safe and warmly laidC
Thy morning bounties ere I left my homeX
The biscuit or confectionary plumY
The fragrant waters on my cheeks bestow'dC
By thy own hand till fresh they shone and glow'dC
All this and more endearing still than allZ
Thy constant flow of love that knew no fallZ
Ne'er roughen'd by those cataracts and brakesA2
That humour interpos'd too often makesA2
All this still legible in mem'ry's pageB2
And still to be so to my latest ageB2
Adds joy to duty makes me glad to payC
Such honours to thee as my numbers mayC
Perhaps a frail memorial but sincereF
Not scorn'd in heav'n though little notic'd hereG
-
Could time his flight revers'd restore the hoursC2
When playing with thy vesture's tissued flow'rsC2
The violet the pink and jessamineD2
I prick'd them into paper with a pinD2
And thou wast happier than myself the whileE2
Would'st softly speak and stroke my head and smileE2
Could those few pleasant hours again appearF
Might one wish bring them would I wish them hereG
I would not trust my heart the dear delightC
Seems so to be desir'd perhaps I mightC
But no what here we call our life is suchF2
So little to be lov'd and thou so muchF2
That I should ill requite thee to constrainG2
Thy unbound spirit into bonds againH2
-
Thou as a gallant bark from Albion's coastC
The storms all weather'd and the ocean cross'dC
Shoots into port at some well haven'd isleE2
Where spices breathe and brighter seasons smileE2
There sits quiescent on the floods that showI2
Her beauteous form reflected clear belowI2
While airs impregnated with incense playC
Around her fanning light her streamers gayC
So thou with sails how swift hast reach'd the shoreQ
Where tempests never beat nor billows roarQ
And thy lov'd consort on the dang'rous tideC
Of life long since has anchor'd at thy sideC
But me scarce hoping to attain that restC
Always from port withheld always distress'dC
Me howling winds drive devious tempest toss'dC
Sails ript seams op'ning wide and compass lostC
And day by day some current's thwarting forceC2
Sets me more distant from a prosp'rous courseC2
But oh the thought that thou art safe and heB
That thought is joy arrive what may to meB
My boast is not that I deduce my birthJ2
From loins enthron'd and rulers of the earthJ2
But higher far my proud pretensions riseC2
The son of parents pass'd into the skiesC2
And now farewell time unrevok'd has runL
His wonted course yet what I wish'd is doneL
By contemplation's help not sought in vainG2
I seem t' have liv'd my childhood o'er againH2
To have renew'd the joys that once were mineK2
Without the sin of violating thineK2
And while the wings of fancy still are freeB
And I can view this mimic shew of theeB
Time has but half succeeded in his theftC
Thyself remov'd thy power to sooth me leftC
