Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causasA
Atque metus omnes et inexorabile fatumB
Subjecit pedibus strepitumque Acherontis avari VirgC
-
-
Happy the mortal who has traced effectsA
To their first cause cast fear beneath his feetD
And death and roaring hell's voracious firesA
-
-
Thankless for favours from on highE
Man thinks he fades too soonF
Though 'tis his privilege to dieE
Would he improve the boonF
-
-
But he not wise enough to scanG
His blest concerns arightE
Would gladly stretch life's little spanG
To ages if he mightE
-
-
To ages in a world of painH
To ages where he goesA
Gall'd by affliction's heavy chainH
And hopeless of reposeA
-
-
Strange fondness of the human heartE
Enamour'd of its harmB
Strange world that costs it so much smartE
And still has power to charmB
-
-
Whence has the world her magic powerI
Why deem we death a foeJ
Recoil from weary life's best hourI
And covet longer woeJ
-
-
The cause is Conscience Conscience oftE
Her tale of guilt renewsA
Her voice is terrible though softE
And dread of death ensuesA
-
-
Then anxious to be longer sparedE
Man mourns his fleeting breathK
All evils then seem light comparedE
With the approach of deathK
-
-
'Tis judgment shakes him there's the fearL
That prompts the wish to stayE
He has incurr'd a long arrearL
And must despair to payE
-
-
Pay follow Christ and all is paidE
His death your peace ensuresA
Think on the grave where He was laidE
And calm descend to yoursA
