-
The new born child of gospel graceB
Like some fair tree when summer's nighC
Beneath Emmanuel's shining faceB
Lifts up his blooming branch on highC
-
No fears he feels he sees no foesD
No conflict yet his faith employsE
Nor has he learnt to whom he owesD
The strength and peace his soul enjoysE
-
But sin soon darts its cruel stingF
And comforts sinking day by dayG
What seem'd his own a self fed springF
Proves but a brook that glides awayG
-
When Gideon arm'd his numerous hostH
The Lord soon made his numbers lessI
And said 'Lest Israel vainly boastH
My arm procured me this success '-
-
Thus will He bring our spirits downJ
And draw our ebbing comforts lowK
That saved by grace but not our ownL
We may not claim the praise we oweK
