Olney Hymn 42: Self-acquaintance Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHI JKJL MNOP

Dear Lord accept a sinful heartA
Which of itself complainsB
And mourns with much and frequent smartA
The evil it containsB
-
There fiery seeds of anger lurkC
Which often hurt my frameD
And wait but for the tempter's workC
To fan them to a flameD
-
Legality holds out a bribeE
To purchase life from TheeF
And Discontent would fain prescribeE
How Thou shalt deal with meF
-
While Unbelief withstands Thy graceG
And puts the mercy byH
Presumption with a brow of brassI
Says 'Give me or I die '-
-
How eager are my thoughts to roamJ
In quest of what they loveK
But ah when duty calls them homeJ
How heavily they moveL
-
Oh cleanse me in a Saviour's bloodM
Transform me by Thy powerN
And make me Thy beloved abodeO
And let me roam no moreP
