Olney Hymn 4: Jehovah-nissi: The Lord My Banner Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHIHJJ EEE KK LEMEEE

By whom was David taughtA
To aim the deadly blowB
When he Goliath foughtA
And laid the Gittite lowB
Nor sword nor spear the stripling tookC
But chose a pebble from the brookC
-
'Twas Israel's God and KingD
Who sent him to the fightE
Who gave him strength to slingD
And skill to aim arightE
Ye feeble saints your strength enduresF
Because young David's God is yoursF
-
Who order'd Gideon forthG
To storm the invaders' campH
With arms of little worthI
A pitcher and a lampH
The trumpets made his coming knownJ
And all the host was overthrownJ
-
Oh I have seen the dayE
When with a single wordE
God helping me to sayE
'My trust is in the Lord '-
My soul hath quell'd a thousand foesK
Fearless of all that could opposeK
-
But unbelief self willL
Self righteousness and prideE
How often do they stealM
My weapon from my sideE
Yet David's Lord and Gideon's friendE
Will help his servant to the endE
