Olney Hymn 36: Afflictions Sanctified By The Word Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DDEE CCCC CCFF CCCC CCCC

Oh how I love Thy holy WordA
Thy gracious covenant O LordB
It guides me in the peaceful wayC
I think upon it all the dayC
-
What are the mines of shining wealthD
The strength of youth the bloom of healthD
What are all joys compared with thoseE
Thine everlasting Word bestowsE
-
Long unafflicted undismay'dC
In pleasure's path secure I stray'dC
Thou mad'st me feel thy chast'ning rodC
And straight I turned unto my GodC
-
What though it pierced my fainting heartC
I bless'd Thine hand that caused the smartC
It taught my tears awhile to flowF
But saved me from eternal woeF
-
Oh hadst Thou left me unchastisedC
Thy precepts I had still despisedC
And still the snare in secret laidC
Had my unwary feet betray'dC
-
I love Thee therefore O my GodC
And breathe towards Thy dear abodeC
Where in Thy presence fully blestC
Thy chosen saints for ever restC
