Olney Hymn 19: Contentment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIJI KLKL MNMN OPO QRSR

Fierce passions discompose the mindA
As tempests vex the seaB
But calm content and peace we findA
When Lord we turn to TheeB
-
In vain by reason and by ruleC
We try to bend the willD
For none but in the Saviour's schoolC
Can learn the heavenly skillD
-
Since at His feet my soul has sateE
His gracious words to hearF
Contented with my present stateE
I cast on Him my careG
-
'Art thou a sinner soul ' He saidH
'Then how canst thou complainI
How light thy troubles here if weigh'dJ
With everlasting painI
-
'If thou of murmuring wouldst be curedK
Compare thy griefs with mineL
Think what my love for thee enduredK
And thou wilt not repineL
-
''Tis I appoint thy daily lotM
And I do all things wellN
Thou soon shalt leave this wretched spotM
And rise with me to dwellN
-
'In life my grace shall strength supplyO
Proportion'd to thy dayP
At death thou still shalt find me nighO
To wipe thy tears away '-
-
Thus I who once my wretched daysQ
In vain repinings spentR
Taught in my Saviour's school of graceS
Have learnt to be contentR
