Olney Hymn 16: The Sower Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFH IJIJ KLML NONO

Ye sons of earth prepare the ploughA
Break up your fallow groundB
The sower is gone forth to sowA
And scatter blessings roundB
-
The seed that finds a stony soilC
Shoots forth a hasty bladeD
But ill repays the sower's toilC
Soon wither'd scorch'd and deadE
-
The thorny ground is sure to balkF
All hopes of harvest thereG
We find a tall and sickly stalkF
But not the fruitful earH
-
The beaten path and highway sideI
Receive the trust in vainJ
The watchful birds the spoil divideI
And pick up all the grainJ
-
But where the Lord of grace and powerK
Has bless'd the happy fieldL
How plenteous is the golden storeM
The deep wrought furrows yieldL
-
Father of mercies we have needN
Of thy preparing graceO
Let the same Hand that give me seedN
Provide a fruitful placeO
