Hebrews ivA
-
Israel in ancient daysB
Not only had a viewA
Of Sinai in a blazeB
But learn'd the Gospel tooA
The types and figures were a glassC
In which thy saw a Saviour's faceD
-
The paschal sacrificeE
And blood besprinkled doorF
Seen with enlighten'd eyesG
And once applied with powerH
Would teach the need of other bloodI
To reconcile an angry GodJ
-
The Lamb the Dove set forthK
His perfect innocenceL
Whose blood of matchless worthM
Whould be the soul's defenceN
For he who can for sin atoneO
Must have no failings of His ownO
-
The scape goat on his headP
The people's trespass boreF
And to the desert ledP
Was to be seen no moreF
In him our surety seem'd to sayQ
Behold I bear your sins awayQ
-
Dipt in his fellow's bloodI
The living bird went freeR
The type well understoodS
Express'd the sinner's pleaR
Described a guilty soul enlargedT
And by a Saviour's death dischargedT
-
Jesus I love to traceD
Throughout the sacred pageU
The footsteps of Thy graceD
The same in every ageU
Oh grant that I may faithful beR
To clearer light vouchsafed to meR
