Of Himself Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

William was once a bashful youthA
His modesty was suchB
That one might say to say the truthA
He rather had too muchB
-
Some said that it was want of senseC
And others want of spiritD
So blest a thing is impudenceC
While others could not bear itE
-
But some a different notion hadF
And at each other winkingG
Observed that though he little saidH
He paid it off with thinkingG
-
Howe'er it happened by degreesC
He mended and grew perterI
In company was more at easeC
And dressed a little smarterI
-
Nay now and then would look quite gayJ
As other people doK
And sometimes said or tried to sayJ
A witty thing or soC
-
He eyed the women and made freeI
To comment on their shapesC
So that there was or seemed to beI
No fear of a relapseC
-
The women said who thought him roughL
But now no longer foolishM
'The creature may do well enoughL
But wants a deal of polish '-
-
At length improved from head to heelN
'Twere scarce too much to sayJ
No dancing bear was so genteelN
Or half so d gagO
-
-
Now that a miracle so strangeP
May not in vain be shownQ
Let the dear maid who wrought the changeP
E'er claim him for her ownQ
