Mortals! Around Your Destined Heads Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGHG IEIE JKLK MNON

Mortals around your destined headsA
Thick fly the shafts of deathB
And lo the savage spoiler spreadsA
A thousand toils beneathC
-
In vain we trifle with our fateD
Try every art in vainE
At best we but prolong the dateD
And lengthen out our painE
-
Fondly we think all danger fledF
For death is ever nighG
Outstrips our unavailing speedH
Or meets us as we flyG
-
Thus the wrecked mariner may striveI
Some desert shore to gainE
Secure of life if he surviveI
The fury of the mainE
-
But there to famine doomed a preyJ
Finds the mistaken wretchK
He but escaped the troubled seaL
To perish on the beachK
-
Since then in vain we strive to guardM
Our frailty from the foeN
Lord let me live not unpreparedO
To meet the fatal blowN
