'I love the Lord ' is still the strainA
This heart delights to singB
But I reply your thoughts are vainA
Perhaps 'tis no such thingB
-
Before the power of love divineC
Creation fades awayD
Till only God is seen to shineC
In all that we surveyD
-
In gulfs of awful night we findE
The God of our desiresF
'Tis there he stamps the yielding mindE
And doubles all its firesF
-
Flames of encircling love investG
And pierce it sweetly throughH
'Tis filled with sacred joy yet pressedG
With sacred sorrow tooH
-
Ah love my heart is in the rightI
Amidst a thousand woesJ
To thee its ever new delightI
And all its peace it owesJ
-
Fresh causes of distress occurK
Where'er I look or moveL
The comforts I to all preferK
Are solitude and loveM
-
Nor exile I nor prison fearN
Love makes my courage greatO
I find a Saviour every whereP
His grace in every stateO
-
Nor castle walls nor dungeons deepQ
Exclude his quickening beamsR
There I can sit and sing and weepQ
And dwell on heavenly themesR
-
There sorrow for his sake is foundS
A joy beyond compareP
There no presumptuous thoughts aboundS
No pride can enter thereP
-
A Saviour doubles all my joysT
And sweetens all my painsU
His strength in my defence employsT
Consoles me and sustainsU
-
I fear no ill resent no wrongV
Nor feel a passion moveL
When malice whets her slanderous tongueW
Such patience is in loveM
