Hope, Like The Short-lived Ray That Gleams Awhile Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEFG HIHI HJHK LMGM NHNH HHHH HOHO JPJQ

Hope like the short lived ray that gleams awhileA
Through wintry skies upon the frozen wasteB
Cheers e'en the face of misery to a smileA
But soon the momentary pleasure's pastC
-
How oft my Delia since our last farewellD
Years that have rolled since that distressful hourE
Grieved I have said when most our hopes prevailF
Our promised happiness is least secureG
-
Oft I have thought the scene of troubles closedH
And hoped once more to gaze upon your charmsI
As oft some dire mischance has interposedH
And snatched the expected blessing from my armsI
-
The seaman thus his shattered vessel lostH
Still vainly strives to shun the threatening deathJ
And while he thinks to gain the friendly coastH
And drops his feet and feels the sands beneathK
-
Borne by the wave steep sloping from the shoreL
Back to the inclement deep again he beatsM
The surge aside and seems to treat secureG
And now the refluent wave his baffled toil defeatsM
-
Had you my love forbade me to pursueN
My fond attempt disdainfully retiredH
And with proud scorn compelled me to subdueN
The ill fated passion by yourself inspiredH
-
Then haply to some distant spot removedH
Hopeless to gain unwilling to molestH
With fond entreaties whom I dearly lovedH
Despair or absense had redeemed my restH
-
But now sole partner in my Delia's heartH
Yet doomed far off in exile to complainO
Eternal absence cannot ease my smartH
And hope subsists but to prolong my painO
-
Oh then kind Heaven be this my latest breathJ
Here end my life or make it worth my careP
Absence from whom we love is worse than deathJ
And frustrate hope severer than dismayQ
