There was a time when tna's silent fireA
Slept unperceived the mountain yet entireA
When conscious of no danger from belowB
She tower'd a cloud capt pyramid of snowB
No thunders shook with deep intestine soundC
The blooming groves that girdled her aroundC
Her unctuous olives and her purple vinesD
Unfelt the fury of those bursting minesD
The peasant's hopes and not in vain assuredE
In peace upon her sloping sides maturedE
When on a day like that of the last doomF
A conflagration labouring in her wombF
She teem d and heaved with an infernal birthG
That shook the circling seas and solid earthG
Dark and voluminous the vapours riseH
And hang their horrors in the neighbouring skiesH
While through the Stygian veil that blots the dayI
In dazzling streaks the vivid lightnings playI
But oh what muse and in what powers of songJ
Can trace the torrent as it burns alongJ
Havoc and devastation in the vanK
It marches o er the prostrate works of manK
Vines olives herbage forests disappearL
And all the charms of a Sicilian yearL
Revolving seasons fruitless as they passM
See it an uninform d and idle massM
Without a soil to invite the tiller s careN
Or blade that might redeem it from despairN
Yet time at length what will not time achieveO
Clothes it with earth and bids the produce liveP
Once more the spiry myrtle crowns the gladeQ
And ruminating flocks enjoy the shadeQ
O bliss precarious and unsafe retreatsR
O charming Paradise of shortlived sweetsR
The self same gale that wafts the fragrance roundC
Brings to the distant ear a sullen soundC
Again the mountain feels the imprison d foeB
Again pours ruin on the vale belowB
Ten thousand swains the wasted scene deploreS
That only future ages can restoreS
Ye monarchs whom the lure of honour drawsT
Who write in blood the merits of your causeU
Who strike the blow then plead your own defenceV
Glory your aim but justice your pretenceV
Behold in AEtna s emblematic firesV
The mischiefs your ambitious pride inspiresV
Fast by the stream that bounds your just domainW
And tells you where you have a right to reignW
A nation dwells not envious of your throneX
Studious of peace their neighbour s and their ownX
Ill fated race how deeply must they rueY
Their only crime vicinity to youY
The trumpet sounds your legions swarm abroadZ
Through the ripe harvest lies their destined roadA2
At every step beneath their feet they treadB2
The life of multitudes a nation s breadB2
Earth seems a garden in its loveliest dressV
Before them and behind a wildernessV
Famine and Pestilence her firstborn sonC2
Attend to finish what the sword begunC2
And echoing praises such as fiends might earnD2
And folly pays resound at your returnD2
A calm succeeds but Plenty with her trainW
Of heartfelt joys succeeds not soon againE2
And years of pining indigence must showB
What scourges are the gods that rule belowB
Yet man laborious man by slow degreesV
Such is his thirst of opulence and easeV
Plies all the sinews of industrious toilF2
Gleans up the refuse of the general spoilF2
Rebuilds the towers that smoked upon the plainW
And the sun gilds the shining spires againE2
Increasing commerce and reviving artG2
Renew the quarrel on the conqueror s partG2
And the sad lesson must be learn d once moreS
That wealth within is ruin at the doorS
What are ye monarchs laurell d heroes sayV
But tnas of the suffering world ye swayV
Sweet Nature stripp d of her embroider d robeH2
Deplores the wasted regions of her globeH2
And stands a witness at Truth s awful barI2
To prove you there destroyers as ye areI2
O place me in some heaven protected isleJ2
Where Peace and Equity and Freedom smileJ2
Where no volcano pours his fiery floodK2
No crested warrior dips his plume in bloodK2
Where Power secures what Industry has wonC2
Where to succeed is not to be undoneC2
A land that distant tyrants hate in vainW
In Britain s isle beneath a George s reignW
