From A Letter To The Rev. Mr. Newton, Late Rector Of St. Mary Woolnoth Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI JKJK LHLH

Says the pipe to the snuff box I can't understandA
What the ladies and gentlemen see in your faceB
That you are in fashion all over the landA
And I am so much fallen into disgraceB
-
-
Do but see what a pretty contemplative airC
I give to the company pray do but note 'emD
You would think that the wise men of Greece were all thereC
Or at least would suppose them the wise men of GothamD
-
-
My breath is as sweet as the breath of blown rosesE
While you are a nuisance where'er you appearF
There is nothing but snivelling and blowing of nosesE
Such a noise as turns any man's stomach to hearG
-
-
Then lifting his lid in a delicate wayH
And opening his mouth with a smile quite engagingI
The box in reply was heard plainly to sayH
What a silly dispute is this we are wagingI
-
-
If you have a little of merit to claimJ
You may thank the sweet smelling Virginian weedK
And I if I seem to deserve any blameJ
The before mention'd drug in apology pleadK
-
-
Thus neither the praise nor the blame is our ownL
No room for a sneer much less a cachinnusH
We are vehicles not of tobacco aloneL
But of anything else they may choose to put in usH
